Scholar Christiana Tembo Aims to Provide Support and Encouragement for Diverse STEM SU Students
Congratulations to Christiana Tembo (Electrical Engineering, 2021), the new president of the Seattle University chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE).
Christiana and other chapter members have worked over the past year to reestablish the SU chapter. She previously served as their treasurer.
The mission of NSBE is to create a world where all Black students can envision themselves as engineers. In this world, Black people seek parity in entering engineering fields, earning degrees, and succeeding professionally. The National Society of Black Engineers is working "to increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community."
A leader in the College of Science and Engineering, Christiana also serves as one of five Diversity Equity and Inclusion Ambassadors for the college. DEI Ambassadors serve as a bridge between students and teachers and help promote the full inclusion of excellence across the social spectrum.
When reflecting on her roles on campus, Christiana shared: "Being a Black woman in STEM in a predominantly White institution has not been easy. The lack of representation in the field can cause a sense of not belonging. At Seattle University, I met people who ensured me that I do belong, which made me even more comfortable to share my unique perspective.
Diversity is important for every field and especially for engineers, because it fosters creativity and innovation. Although there is still some work to be done, I am extremely grateful that Seattle University recognizes the importance of diversity in STEM. I am even more excited to be part of that process."
