ALFIE SCHOLARS PROGRAM
The 2-Year Alfie Scholar Program
During the 2-Year Alfie Scholars Program, scholars combine their rich lived experiences with their informed research and analysis about an issue of social significance on which they hope to lead a change for the common good. They attend year-round civility leadership sessions and a specially tailored Philosophy course each summer. Scholars examine their social issue through the lenses of civility and ethics as they analyze critically, creatively, and collaboratively in their search for solutions. At the end of each summer, all scholars write a paper and give a presentation at a professional style conference. During both academic years, scholars amplify their voice as they polish for publication their papers, give different versions of their presentations, create social media posts and other media platforms, and engage with others working toward solutions.
Junior Summer
Senior Summer
During the first summer of the program, Alfie Scholars engage in a wrap-around program that combines civility leadership and the 5-credit UCOR 2500 Philosophy of the Human Person required class. This program focuses on developing tools to examine and analyze social justice issues through the lenses of civility and ethics as the scholars discuss the significance of the issue and provide an analysis of what is contributing to or causing the issue.
The second summer, the Scholars engage in the wrap-around program that combines civility leadership and the 2-credit Alfie Scholar Civility and Ethics Applied class. Having revised their papers during the academic year, the scholars turn their focus to completing the paper by examining solutions or actions steps. In their final paper and presentation the scholars discuss the significance of the issue, provide an analysis of what is contributing to or causing the issue, and suggest solutions to addressing the issue.

During this program
-
During this summer program scholars form a safe and rich learning community as they share their lived experiences, hopes, fears, and dreams. As they learn about and grow to trust each other, they form a deep, supportive familial bond that provides a confidence-building touchstone and propels them towards their goals. They also organize study-groups, social gatherings, and birthday celebrations that extend beyond the summer. #AlfieStrong. They also bond with members of the Alfie Team, receive coaching from campus resources, and connect to members of the larger university.
-
During this summer program scholars empower their voices and learning processes to adapt to academic expectations as they write an academic paper and give a presentation about a social issue that is meaningful to them. In addition to sharing their research results, their analysis, and their learning process with the cohort and the campus resources, they receive individual feedback and mentoring. This process provides invaluable developmental learning for the individual scholars to practice expressing their ideas in low-stakes, in-class discussion and Socratic dialogue, and individual coaching sessions, before the graded final paper and presentation.
-
During this summer program scholars become civility leaders as they develop greater awareness of themselves and their shared humanity. They learn from other members of the cohort about different lived experiences, perspectives, values, approaches, and the social issues that their colleagues in the cohort have chosen to explore in their papers and presentations.
