About Cohort 8
The nine 2023 Alfie Scholars cohort members are between the ages of 19 and 36. Eight are women. Seven scholars were born outside the United States, specifically in Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, two in the Philippines, Sudan, and Vietnam. One is an international student. Seven are the first in their families to attend college. All nine of the scholars speak at least one other language, in addition to English. They speak the following 15 different languages among them: Amharic, Arabic, Cantonese, Dari, Farsi, Ilocano, Mandarin, Oromo, Pashto, Samoan, Somali, Swahili, Tagalog, Tigrinya, and Vietnamese.
Nine of the scholars are transferring from six Washington State community colleges: Bellevue College, Clover Park Technical, Green River, Highline College, Renton Technical, Seattle Central, and South Seattle Colleges.
These new scholars bring a wide variety of experiences, perspectives, and career goals. Six are working to complete degrees in Nursing, one in Biochemistry, one in Computer Science, and one in Diagnostic Ultrasound.
