Kevin’s Story
My journey to reach this point began in 2013 when I made the decision to return to college and pursue higher education. This journey has been both terrifying and unimaginably rewarding. During this journey, I learned more than just academics and nursing. I learned so much about myself as I developed the resilience and drive to continue to push through long hours and quarters of working full time while attending night and online classes at Tacoma Community College. I was recently reminded by a former coworker of how I would always have flash cards on me at work and spend any free moment I had studying. I learned what I was capable of achieving and pushed myself to do my best and getting accepted into Seattle University and the Alfie Scholars program. Now that I am nearing the end of this phase of my journey I look back and I think of how far I have come, the amount of sacrifices I've made to get here, and how excited I am for what lies ahead. For me, what lies ahead is a position in the Nurse Residency program at Tacoma General Hospital in the Neuro-Trauma ICU. The years of effort and determination have allowed me to overcome my own self-limiting doubts and know that I have what it takes to be a lifelong learner, a leader, and a nurse. In my role at Tacoma General, I hope to continue my lifelong learning by progressing through all the potential certifications available to me as a nurse and potentially a graduate degree in nursing. As a leader, I hope to position myself within the organizations I find myself to inspire positive change and advocate for those who need it. As a nurse, I hope to heal and care for those who are at their most vulnerable times while in the ICU. Seattle University and the Alfie Scholarship program has helped guide me towards the path of accomplishing all of that and more.
Goals:
As someone with varied leadership positions in stressful environments, I want to carry my experiences to a career in healthcare. As a future graduate of Seattle University’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, I want to work as a registered nurse in a critical care setting, to incorporate my previous skill set of working in stressful, high-stakes environments. I also hope to positively affect people’s lives during some of their most difficult and trying times. After building a strong base of knowledge in critical care nursing, I want to progress to either flight nursing or towards nurse anesthesia as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.
On Civility:
A civility leader is someone who constantly strives to understand the struggles faced by us all as we journey through life. A civility leader does not remain passive in the face of these struggles, but toils at alleviating those burdens as best they can. They navigate the intricacies of life as they motivate, inspire, and empower others to constantly make the world a better place.
