Anastasiya’s Story

These past two years I feel like I grew into myself more than I ever could have imagined. I was so anxious for the change of starting nursing school, but I feel so lucky to have been able to have this opportunity and attend this school. I never would have imagined myself to get to the point where I am now, being able to learn so much and get through it during a pandemic. I am so grateful for the people I have met through the nursing program, and for the Alfie program for making it possible for me to be the first in my family to graduate college in America. I have gained so many skills throughout my time here, and I can't wait to see what nursing holds for me in the future. It's very bittersweet leaving my identity as a student behind - but I welcome this next chapter of life with open arms. I will definitely miss the phenomenal people I met along the way.

Goals:

My immediate goal is to graduate from Seattle University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and then continue to further my education by going to grad school to become a nurse practitioner. I want to make others feel safe in their time of need and want to use my skills and education to alleviate the stress that comes with being sick and promote wellness to others. I want to make sure I give back to my community and advocate for those who are often underrepresented and overlooked.

On Civility:

Civility can be started in our society like a domino effect. When one person experiences an interaction that makes them feel heard, acknowledged, and respected, it will inspire them to carry that feeling to the next conversation they have, leading the way to a positive change that will benefit and empower our society and individuals to be more humane.

To me, civility is more than just an act of respect for others. Fostering civility begins with self-reflection of my own behaviors, understanding and examining my predispositions towards different subjects and unchecked biases. It’s important to cultivate my way of thinking so that it becomes open to others’ opinions, not closed off and filled with negative emotion. I have learned that it is vital to admit when I am wrong and to ask for forgiveness. In times where I have felt like I’ve let myself down, I would use negative self-talk. In doing that, I have realized that it is necessary to extend that forgiveness to myself as well. Civility comes from within, which means I need to make a conscious effort to be kind to myself. What results from practicing civility internally is the courage to implement it into my daily interactions with others.

Civility is a lifelong practice. As I continue to develop my creativity, community and consciousness, I will deepen my sense of humanity. Civility teaches us that to build a better world, we need to start with caring for each other, rejecting the notion of “each man for himself” and unifying each other as one. Civility encourages us to see beyond our differences and disagreements. I am ready to put this to the test and inspire others to do the same.
