Alpha Sigma Nu is the only honor society permitted to bear the name “Jesuit.” It recognizes students who distinguish themselves in scholarship, loyalty, and service; and the society encourages its members to a lifelong pursuit of intellectual development, deepening Ignatian spirituality, service to others, and a commitment to the core principles of Jesuit education.
The Seattle University Chapter of Alpha Sigma Nu is one of 28 chapters worldwide. Each chapter has a faculty adviser and student officers, who coordinate the induction of new members and plan chapter activities such as the blood drive that the Seattle University chapter recently hosted.
In the six years since the Alfie Scholars Program began at Seattle University, fully half of all the Alfie Scholars have been inducted into Alpha Sigma Nu. In addition, two Alfie Scholars have served as vice president, and the chapter president in each of the past two years has been an Alfie Scholar.
During the ceremony, President Eduardo Peñalver provided the keynote address. The chapter also recognized five new honorary members, including Alfie Scholars Founder and Executive Director Paula Lustbader and Program Director Carol Cochran.
Paula shared these thoughts with the new inductees: “Alfie Scholars and Alpha Sigma Nu share the important goal of fostering respectful and civil dialogue among diverse persons, with intentional inclusiveness, in an effort to serve the common good. In these times especially, groups such as Alpha Sigma Nu are much needed and give us reason to hope for a more equitable and humane world.”
