Salina’s Story
I grew up with my big family consisting of dad, grandfather, grandmother, and my younger brother. Living in the countryside of Nepal, I had the chance to develop strong family values and interpersonal relationships. I am the first in my family to attend college. Growing up without mom and living with my grandparents, my life was tough. I had to do all the household work before going to school. I used to do my homework during the breaktime, so I can do all the household work. Especially in the place I came from, girls usually don’t go to the school and get married at a very early age. For me, it was very hard to continue school because of society and their thoughts about women. I am the one of the lucky people in the world because of my dad. My dad always supported me through my entire childhood. He always inspired me to do more and more. He always wanted me to achieve the highest score in the class. So, I always got the first position. After witnessing all the inequality and injustice, I told myself that I would do my best to make sure that I would fulfill my dad’s dream and I will help him to change my society’s point of view about women.
At 19 years old I decided to move to a different country to pursue my dream. I knew that moving to a different country is very difficult for me; however it is a good opportunity to explore my knowledge and learn some new skills that I can apply in my home country. I knew this opportunity would give me the platform to learn a new language, strengthen my voice, and become financially independent. I didn’t know that coming to the USA, I would meet the most inspiring and caring husband. After getting married, my husband always supported me throughout my college life. He is the most supportive, caring, inspiring husband that anyone could desire. As a first generation college student in my family, being accepted to one of the best universities in the state was very exciting for me; even more exciting is being a member of one of the most prestigious scholars, I feel so lucky.
My advice to new students is don’t give up on your dream; no matter whatever your hardship is just keep doing your work. One day success going to be at your side. Hard work and dedication always leads to success.
Goals:
Growing up in orthodox Hindu family I have had a chance to see the family values, cultural belief and tradition which helped me to set up my future goals. Living in the countryside of Nepal and witnessing so many unhealthy and unhygienic practice in healthcare such as “Chaoupaddi” Mensuration taboo influences me to become a nurse. My goal is to graduate from Seattle University with Bachelor of Science In Nursing and start working as a knowledgeable and compassionate nurse that truly makes a difference in patients’ lives by providing excellent patient- centered care. Besides my professional career, I wanted to work as a social activist on behalf of underprivileged and vulnerable communities. My goal is to inspire, influence, empower and educate underprivileged people. I strongly believe that my knowledge of patients’ care and advocacy helps to inspire my people in my community.
On Civility:
Civility means to respect and accept the differences of others and to be responsible for polite behavior in front of others. Civility begins from home where the foundation is initiated from parents. Civility asks the individual to respect others to get the relationship strengthened.
